There are so-called "independent films," and then there is COCAINE ANGEL. Shot in Jacksonville, Florida between April 21 and June 6, 2005, the filmmakers set out to deliver a product that would overcome its nearly crippling limitations and have a genuine impact on viewers. While two other "real movies" were being shot in town (one starring Mr. Hollywood himself, John Travolta), the COCAINE ANGEL crew quietly went about their business, using whatever resources they had to present an honest, unflinching portrait of life on the shadier side of the street.
Written by Damian Lahey in the fall of 2004 and based on stories that Lahey had heard about--and had, himself, lived--the project became even more of a reality when Michael Tully signed on as director in early 2005. On April 1st, Tully arrived in Jacksonville to help Lahey and Unit Production/Locations Manager Hilary White continue pre-production. The next few hectic weeks involved finding locals who could best bring Lahey's script to life. Fortunately, Lahey's home-away-from-home, The Starlight Cafe, located in Five Points, had enough characters to do the trick. With a few outside exceptions, the entire film is populated with Starlight frequenters. This communal energy only added to the enthusiasm of the production, fueling it with a spirit that most producers can only dream about.
And when cinematographer M. Shawn Lewallen drove into town in late April--fresh off his honeymoon, no less!--the crew was complete. Just a few days later, production had begun ...
